US President Trump’s Ex-Chief Strategist, Steve Bannon, believes that cryptocurrencies could empower the anti-establishment forces in Europe. According to Bannon, digital currencies and its accompanying technology, Blockchain, will be a way for governments and companies to evade the control imposed by central banks. Bannon’s statements was made on March 6 during an event organized by Die Weltwoche, a Swiss Newspaper.
Bannon stated, “We take control of the central banks away. That will give us the power again.” He declares that the mainstream banking establishment is a new type of “serfdom”. In his lecture, he declared: “Once you take control of your currency, once you take control of your data, once you take control of your citizenship, that’s when you’re going to have true freedom.” The sold-out event was Bannon’s first ever speech in Europe. The former executive chairman of Breitbart News was invited in Zurich by the editor in chief of Die Weltwoche, Roger Koeppel, due to Bannon’s role in getting a non-traditional president, such as Trump, to be elected.
Koeppel acknowledged that people from various fields are curious of Bannon’s fame or infamy, and would like to see him address a European crowd. He explained, “..people want to form their own judgment on this controversial personality.” Bannon’s first European speech was about the worldwide implications of populism. However, Bannon’s views on cryptocurrency suits the European Country mainly due to its plans to build a global hub exclusively for digital currencies and Blockchain. Zug, a town in Switzerland, is currently establishing itself as “Crypto Valley”. Additionally, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority or FINMA is creating policies to make the country be globally competitive in developing Blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and distributed ledger technologies.
