The legacy of Russell Tyrone Jones, also known as Ol’ Dirty Bastard – one of the founding members of the rap group Wu-Tang Clan – will now be immortalized via a digital currency thanks to the efforts of his son, Bar-son James, also known as Young Dirty. Ol’ Dirty Bastard died in 2004 due to a drug overdose. His son, Young Bastard, will now serve as the face of the new cryptocurrency called Dirty Coin – a joint collaboration between Ol’ Dirty’s estate and entertainment industry firm Link Media Partners.
The Dirty Coin currency will be symbolized via the ticker ODB. The ODB currency is set to be seen on the blockchain network of TAO as a token. Users will be able to trade Dirty Coin late this year on the AltMarket exchange. The launch of the Dirty Coin currency will similarly function as a base to fund the soon-to-be-released Young Dirty album. The coin will also be used to purchase Ol’Dirty Bastard- related merchandise as well as gain access to Young Dirty’s shows. According to Young Dirty, the coin will benefit fans as they will have the opportunity to enter the show virtually at no cost. He explains, “If fans basically bought a Dirty Coin before the concert, they have a better chance of getting in, probably for the price of nothing. So it’s a big opportunity for our fans.”
In an interview Young Dirty did with CoinDesk, he wishes that the launch of his own cryptocurrency will similarly inspire other artists to consider digital currencies. He believes cryptocurrency is “the biggest thing known to man.” Another Wu-Tang Clan member, Ghostface Killah, similarly launched his own currency last year called Cream Capital – Cream comes from the Wu-Tang Clan song C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me).
Young Dirty promises to continue what his father started, but unlike Ol’ Dirty, Bar-son prefers to do everything his father didn’t do: “I’d rather be sober and continue his legacy. I do the opposite of everything he did. I don’t smoke, don’t drink, and I’m learning how to have less babies.”When he was asked about what his father would say with regards to cryptocurrencies, Young Dirty responded, “He would’ve been like, ‘I knew this was coming.'”
