Savor is a closed town found in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, a federal subject in Russia. The town of Savor is home to the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Physics, a center that has a primary focus of enhancing nuclear weaponry. It is also the site where Russia’s first nuclear weapon was constructed.
At the moment, the nuclear center is currently the center of scandal, as a group of engineers have been arrested for mining cryptocurrency on the nuclear center’s supercomputers. The supercomputers in the facility are literally the most powerful computers in the world. They would be the perfect tools for mining. That said, it would take a lot of discipline the resist the temptation to mine. Discipline these engineers did not have.
It wasn’t hard to catch the engineers in the act. Due to security purposes related to the research taking place in the nuclear center, none of the systems in the nuclear center have an internet connection. The engineers basically set off an alarm for trouble when they attempted to connect to the internet. Once the attempt was made they were immediately found out and placed under arrest.
Tatyana Zalesskaya, the institutes head of press has stated, “Similar attempts have recently been registered in a number of large companies with large computing capacities, which will be severely suppressed at our enterprises, this is technically a hopeless and criminal offense,”
Information regarding the number of engineers involved in the offense hasn’t been released. In fact most of the elements surrounding the case still remains largely in the dark. The Russian Federal Security Service hasn’t released any statements since the crime has taken place, yet it is believed that the offenders are going to have a criminal case brought up against them.
No doubt cases like this will influence Russia’s stance on cryptocurrencies and the regulations on them will grow even stricter than the ones already in place.
