As of today, you can find over 1,000 different cryptocurrencies floating around out there. In the beginning they certainly weren’t taken as seriously as they are today. While many companies were very serious, some altcoins came from a more humorous background. Some were made exclusively for fans of rap music, others were made for purchasing specific items on the web. There were wacky coins everywhere. Today we’re going to take a look at some of the most serious and silly coins that have been around for years. We’re also going to find out where they are now.
- Dogecoin – Dogecoin was first released in 2013 as a parody and nothing more. It was released immediately upon hard times as the coin was hacked and millions were stolen from the Dogewallet. Today the coin is seeing a fair share of success and everyone involved with the coin’s creation is baffled.
- Coinye West – Coinye West was never meant to be taken seriously, it was just something fun for people involved with the hip hop community. Sadly, the coin died after seven months when Kanye West got wind of the coin and sued the developers in copyright infringement lawsuit. The coin was brought back as simply Coinye, but as of 2017 nobody is really involving themselves with this coin.
- Ethereum – Vitalik Buterin’s creation, Ethereum saw the launch of Ether tokens in 2015. This wasn’t created as a mere joke, in fact this cryptocurrency comes with a worldview that has inspired many investors to stand behind it. Today Ethereum runs second to only bitcoin in the cryptocurrency race.
- Litecoin – Litecoin first came to light in 2011. Charlie Lee’s brainchild was completely inspired by Bitcoin, but worked on a completely different algorithm. Litecoin had a much faster turnaround and included much more coins. Today they are making headlines, yet they are still dragging behind bigger coins like ether and bitcoin.
