Organizers of the “Crypto Investor Show” tout the event as the first large-scale cryptocurrency-related event in Britain. It was also described as the “biggest crypto and blockchain event for investors”, with most attendees reportedly keen to be part of the next initial coin offering or ICO. According to Patrick Dooley, the founder and chief executive of the trade fair, more than 2,500 tickets were sold. Dooley claims most of the ticket holders lined up for an hour just to enter the event’s conference center.
Dooley acknowledges the power which government and regulators have on cryptocurrencies, thus the choice of staging the event in the heart of London right in front of the Houses of Parliament. He explained, “We wanted to be right in the centre of London opposite the Houses of Parliament, given that governance and regulation is such a big talking point in the sector.” He describes one of the main reasons for the crypto show was to present to investors all the information they need to know with regards to cryptocurrencies. He declared, “We wanted to open up the space [cryptocurrencies] to the everyday investor because they should really know about it.”
A few of the attendees claimed to be unsatisfied with the ICOs offered in the event. Plus, staff hired to distribute flyers possess little knowledge of blockchain technology. According to Globcoin’s Linda Leaney – Globcoin is said to be a cryptocurrency backed by gold and global currencies – it is critical to not be easily swayed with marketing offered for various digital coins or ICOs. She explained, “[You have to ask] is it actually solving a problem or is it just making one up?”
An event attendee, 39-year old engineering student and crypto-investor Mohammed Shukeel from Birmingham, came to the show in order to have face-to-face contact with like-minded investors. He began investing in cryptocurrency the past year and claims, “I’d rather not say how much money I’ve made, but it has been quite a lot.” London has been a regular host of a slew of conferences on bitcoin and crypto-related technology. The Crypto Investor Show is primarily targeted to the general public as well as cryptocurrency experts.
